Looking and Seeing Your Best with Collins Vision
When Collins Vision opened its doors in 2004, it was to create a unique experience in addition to providing the very best eye care in Southwest Florida. With the addition of Dr. Stephen Jones, Collins Vision now offers both ophthalmology and cosmetic surgery under the same roof.
Dr. Jones is an ophthalmologist who specializes in cosmetic and reconstructive surgery. While he takes care of patients suffering from all kinds of ocular issues, such as cataracts and glaucoma, the doctor says, “My specialty is oculofacial plastics, especially the eyes and brow.”
The eyes age faster than almost any other part of the face, and they just so happen to be the first thing that people focus on, literally. For many people, the eyes are one of their most beautiful physical features, but are sometimes hidden by drooping eyelids and puffy skin. This tired and even sad look can easily be fixed through an operation known as a blepharoplasty.
Small incisions are made in the crease of the eyelid to remove excess skin, resulting in a more open look. If your eyelids are folding over your lash line, or if you have trouble putting on makeup because of the excess skin on your lids, you are a good candidate for blepharoplasty.
Removing this skin is not just about aesthetics; it can also greatly improve the peripheral vision of patients, according to Dr. Jones. When handling the lower lid, fat can easily be removed if it is puffy, fat can easily be removed. On the opposite end of the spectrum, if the lower lid is hollow, volume can be added.
Dr. Jones says, “For most patients, surgery combined with the use of something like cosmetic Botox and fillers can give them an even greater overall result.” The use of injectables is something he takes great pride in executing at Collins Vision. “Every patient and procedure is different, and it’s important to consider all areas in and around the eye to maximize results” he says.
The doctor is known for taking his time with each patient, making sure that whether it’s a surgical or non-surgical procedure, the results look natural. “It takes an artistic eye. There is no cookie-cutter approach.”
Dr. Jones grew up in Troy, Ohio. His mother was a nurse and his father an attorney. As a child living in the country, he always knew he would go to college but wasn’t sure which of his parents’ tracks he would follow. When exploring pre-law, he was having trouble embracing the field and remembers with relief, “My Dad said one day he thought medicine would be a better fit for me – I’m glad he said that.”
Leaving the cornfields outside of Dayton for medical school at Ohio University, he says, “It was near the West Virginia border with these beautiful mountains. I was so happy to be there and be in medical school.” The road to ophthalmology and oculoplastics was one he “fell into” but it has proven to be a perfect fit.
While looking for a medical practice to join, Dr. Jones says, “I immediately connected with the doctors and staff at Collins Vision; that doesn’t always happen.” He continues, “I liked that fact that Dr. Collins had not only built this great practice but also that he planned on staying and working for a long time. It felt stable and secure.”
It’s not just the positive interaction with his co-workers, Dr. Jones is also fond of the clientele he has found here. “I can relate to the people. A lot of them are from somewhere else including the states that I’ve spent time in. There is a shared understanding and background. It’s a natural fit and easy for me.”
A physician with a heart, Dr. Jones foregoes spending Thanksgiving with his family every year and instead travels to Mexico where he performs sight-saving surgeries and treatments on underprivileged and impoverished people who are fighting blindness. He smiles humbly, “I’m very grateful.”
If you think heavy lids are compromising your vision, or you are weary of looking tired because of them, call Dr. Jones for a consultation.
