We love Shave Ice. We’ve had it since, well, since we can remember. Those long hot summer days up north spent at the beach. With our family. At around 3pm, we’d leave the beach, go up on the boardwalk and head to the shave Ice cart. When we were parents, we’d go with our kids to that very same spot. Wild Cherry, Sour Grape, Green Apple, each of us had our favorite flavors. Right after we were finished, we’d stick our tongues out to display our lime red, purple and bright green colors, and we’d laugh at each other. Our passion, love and the connection that we experienced as kids, teens and adults, helped us lay the foundation for The Shaved Ice Bar.
That passion has developed into a mission. How can we provide the finest and most authentic Hawaiian style shave ice and homemade ice cream to our customers while offering an environment that will encourage you to stick around with your friends and family.
It’s All about the Water
There’s no more important ingredient in our product than water. We’re not fooling around here. You should know that all of the water flowing through our ice block makers, and all of the water that goes into making our 60 flavors is really special. Our water is filtered through a process called reverse osmosis. Reverse Osmosis applies pressure to force water molecules through a semi-permeable membrane, allowing only pure clean water to pass through. It’s that very same water that makes all of our ice and all of our flavors.
We are snow-makers
There’s a process to shaving our face and our legs. We all know that. Shave ice is no different. If you’re not utilizing the best machinery or the proper process, things can get messy. Our Block Ice Shavers are the result of 15 years of research and design. The powdery snow produced by our shavers result in a very fine and fluffy snow that acts like a sponge when we add flavors. You may remember those sno-cones made of crushed and crunchy ice, where there’s a loss of flavor midway into your experience, and a puddle of flavor waiting for you at the bottom of the cone? This is largely due to the lack of density within the ice itself. This causes the flavoring to sit on top of the crushed ice, rather than absorbing into it. This is not the case with our fine powdery snow.
We taste really good
Our Ice flavors are something to behold (and taste). There’s a lot of care that goes into making our flavors. Within these flavors you will find absolutely NO high fructose corn syrup. In fact, every one of our top 40 flavors are made with 100% pure cane sugar. And we offer over 20 natural flavors, which are made from fruit, vegetables and spirulina. We also offer sugar free natural flavors, sweetened with 100% Organic Stevia Leaf Extract.
We’ve got the best darn Ice Cream south of the Arctic Circle.
Finding the right ice cream is perhaps the most rewarding job of all. We sampled dozens of ice creams from lots of ice cream makers. Once we tried Working Cow’s ice cream, we knew we had found the best. Single batch, hand blended, locally made ice cream. From family recipes, using only the finest ingredients. Though shave ice traces its roots to Japan hundreds of years ago, it’s the Hawaiians who perfected it. You could call it “indigenous” to Hawaii; that’s why they call it Hawaiian Shave Ice. From Maui to Oahu to the Big Island, this really is their thing. The green sea turtle is also indigenous to Hawaii. They refer to the green sea turtle as “Honu”, which also means “good luck”. We felt an instant connection to this fellow. Green sea turtles are endangered, as are all species of sea turtles around the world. We’re all about the envirnonment
We’re serious about leaving a gentle footprint on the environment. All of our serving cups, which may look and seem plastic, are actually made from 100% corn. They’re certified 100% compostable by the State of California. Our spoons are sturdy and reusable. When you bring your spoon back, your topping is free. Every time. And our napkins are made from 100% recycled paper.
We believe music is a wonderful way to connect. Here at The Shaved Ice Bar, you’re going to hear music. Lots of it! It’s going to be a little more “present” than at other places. We’ll be playing everything from Pop, Rap, Country, Hip Hop, Rock and Roll, and lots more. We’ll be listening to you and your suggestions. Live music, karaoke and mic nights will be featured. Monday night is Motown Monday. Friday night is Phish Phriday, where you’ll have the opportunity to listen to really great jam bands from the past and present.
